Press Showcase will be Wednesday, 4/16. This is a mandatory rehearsal.

Tech Rehearsals will be the week prior to opening. No conflicts accepted during Press Showcase (Wednesday, 4/16), Tech Week or Performances. *see note about conflicts below.
The week before opening, performers should plan on being present at all tech rehearsals. Every effort will be made to minimize rehearsals going over time. Flexibility is appreciated. The artistic staff reserve the right to make adjustments to the tech schedule based on the needs of the production and the venue restrictions.
Conflicts do not necessarily negate the opportunity to be cast, but we must know about them up front to factor that into the casting decisions. Barring emergencies, additional conflicts added/disclosed after casting could result in dismissal from the production. Adding all of your conflicts after casting could result in your removal of the production or at the very least, removal from key numbers or scenes. Missing more than 2 rehearsals outside of the originally scheduled absences may result in your removal from the production.

Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon. with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
NOTE: **At the Wayne we believe strongly that it is crucial to cast actors who reflect the diversity of the characters and the setting of the world of Rent. The gender identity and sexual orientation of several characters are written into the script and will absolutely be honored. Using the text as our guide there are only references to one character’s race in the show (Mimi). Our aim is to create as diverse a cast as humanly possible and to contribute positively to discussions about inclusivity and representation allowing the production to resonate and build deeper connections with our audiences.
In reference to the character descriptions below – The characters in this show are on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, gender queer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with. We also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character, but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Unless otherwise noted, roles will be open for consideration of actors of all ethnicities.
