August 20: ‘Charles Thomson: The Man Who Told the Truth’

The Augusta County Historical Society presents the BBC (Northern Ireland) documentary “Charles Thomson: The Man Who Told The Truth,” on Tuesday, August 20, at 7 p.m. at the Wayne Theatre in downtown Waynesboro. Admission is Pay What You Will. Advance reservations are recommended.

The 60-minute documentary tells the captivating story of one of America’s forgotten founding fathers, Ulster Scotsman Charles Thomson. The movie tells the saga of Thomson and his role in American politics, the Revolutionary War, and the formation of the United States.

Following the hour-long documentary, local historian Nancy Sorrells and Dr. Patrick Spero, the Director of the American Philosophical Society Library in Philadelphia, will each give short presentations expanding upon their roles in the documentary and what they know of the Thomson story.

Although mostly forgotten today, Thomson was one of the most famous men in America before, during, and after the Revolution. He was trusted by the Native Americans, served as Secretary of the Continental Congress, and was the designer of the U.S. Seal. The career of this extraordinary Ulster-Scot is traced by Bruce Clark, a veteran foreign news reporter for the Economist and the Financial Times, who like Thomson, is from Ulster and lives in the Thomson home place.

The movie includes a number of connections to Virginia and Augusta County, where three of Thomson’s brothers came to live, worship, and farm and where Charles Thomson himself owned land.
