March 9: Richmond Ballet

March 9: Richmond Ballet

The Wayne Theatre presents the Richmond Ballet on Friday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets start at $23.

Since its early days as a civic company in the 1950s, Richmond Ballet, The State Ballet of Virginia, has flourished as a home for the past, present, and future of dance. Now in its 34th professional season, Richmond Ballet boasts an expansive repertory that includes 19th and 20th century masterpieces as well as almost 75 new ballets by contemporary choreographers.

Portrait of Billie
Choreography: John Butler; Music: Billie Holiday
Portrait of Billie is a poised and elegant duet that depicts the pathos of famed blues singer Billie Holiday. Butler’s choreography brings her vividly to life in this portrayal of Billie’s public glory along with her private demons, culminating when her lover joins her and their passion ignites and leads to dissatisfaction and rejection.

Tarantella
Choreography: George Balanchine; Music: Louis Moreau Gottschalk arranged by Hershy Kay
The nimble quickness of Tarantella provides a virtuosic showcase. With the profusion of steps and the quick changes of direction, this brief but explosive pas de deux typifies the ways in which Balanchine expanded the traditional vocabulary of classical dance.

Tribute
Choreography: Malcolm Burn; Music: Ricardo Drigo
Tribute is Malcolm Burn’s delightfully darling tribute to legendary mime Marcel Marceau. Created as a short piece for Richmond Ballet’s New Works Festival and later fully produced as a result of its popularity, this charming ballet honors Marceau and his many faces. Set to the music of Ricard Drigo, Burn’s always studied and layered classical choreography takes on a comedic tone in Tribute, a light-hearted work for five dancers.

Winter’s Angels
Choreography: Ma Cong; Music: Olafur Arnalds
Winter’s Angels, Richmond Ballet’s newest commissioned piece, premiered on September 19, 2017. This contemporary creation by Chinese-born choreographer Ma Cong, ties together fluid movements with a soulful score and is sure to move any spirit.

The Ballet’s scope also includes its acclaimed School of Richmond Ballet and Minds In Motion outreach program.

Under the leadership of founding Artistic Director Stoner Winslett, Richmond Ballet continues to further its mission to uplift and awaken the human spirit.
